The Chital is native of open deciduous forests and grasslands of India and Sri Lanka. A moderate-sized deer, Chital were introduced to Australia during the 1800's. We began farming these beautiful deer at Hahndorf in 1979. Being a subtropical species, the cold winters of Hahndorf was a bit too much for them. Consequently, we transferred them to the more moderate climate of Highland Valley where they have thrived and continue to breed all year round. Chital are a high yielding carcass in comparison with Fallow Deer.
